The Issues
Kerry250

Catholics in America overwhelmingly support sound reproductive health policies. Catholics want affordable contraception, safe and legal abortions and affordable childcare.

Despite the impression given by the Vatican and US Catholic bishops, the majority of American Catholics strongly support policies that enable individuals and families to make the private decision whether or not to have a child in good conscience.

Catholics in Public Life focuses on the following issues:

*
The Catholic Vote
Polls, including those available through
www.catholicsinpubliclife.org, show that the majority of Catholics disagree with the bishops about the morality and availability of contraception and family planning, emergency contraception, stem cell research and abortion. In fact, on these and many other issues, Catholics tend to mirror the electorate at large. Click here to review articles on the political and religious views of Catholics.

*
Prochoice and Catholic
Catholics can and do hold a variety of positions regarding access to abortion, contraception and reproductive choice. Moreover, prochoice beliefs are grounded in Catholic theological tradition. Click
here to read articles presenting an alternative Catholic view to the Vatican’s opposition to reproductive health and rights.

*
Church and State
Policy makers should have the freedom to promote and support the best policies for their constituents without being threatened or attacked by the Catholic hierarchy. Unfortunately, the Vatican and some bishops use the power of the pulpit to attempt to inappropriately influence policy by intimidating Catholic policy makers.
Read more about these attempts—and how courageous Catholic politicians respond.
